Nipple/Areola

Reconstruction of the nipple and areola (pigmented skin around the nipple) is typically performed under local anesthesia, as an outpatient procedure, several months after breast reconstruction. The nipple is reconstructed by “puckering” the skin of the breast so as to create projection. The areola is reconstructed in one of two ways: 1) tattoo of the skin or 2) skin grafts from the abdomen or groin region.
