What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation, or augmentation mammoplasty, is a plastic surgery referring to breast implant or fat implants. Breast augmentations are designed to increase the size, shape, and texture of the breast. In addition to cosmetic reasons, breast implants are also used in reconstructive surgery and sex reassignment surgery for male to female transformations. While hormonal therapy may aid breast development, a breast augmentation is a valuable transgender surgery for individuals that desire a larger cup size than hormones can produce.
How is Breast Augmentation Performed?
Procedures vary based on the type of implant, how much enlargement is being done, and body type. First, the surgeon will make an incision under the breasts, arms, and nipples. Breast implants are then put into a pocket above or below your chest muscle. After the implant is placed, the surgeon closes the cuts with sutures or surgical tape. In addition, a tracheal shave procedure may be performed in conjunction with a vaginoplasty or facial feminization surgery (FFS).
What are the Advantages of Breast Augmentation?
Advantages include enhanced self-image and self-confidence, and increased fullness, projection, and appearance of the breasts.
Risks and Complications of Breast Augmentation?
Risks include the risk of anesthesia, infection, bleeding, scarring, capsular contracture, changes in sensation, pain, asymmetry, and interference with breast cancer detection. It is also possible for implants to rupture and leak. If saline implants rupture, the saline will be safely absorbed by the body.
