Dr. Schechter’s single-stage method of vaginoplasty utilizes the penile inversion and disassembly technique combined with a scrotal-perineal flap to create the vagina. This technique uses the penile skin and a portion of the scrotum to line the new vagina. The clitoris is created from both a portion of the glans penis, as well as small amount of retained erectile tissue. This technique preserves important sensory nerves and erectile tissue in order to achieve a natural appearing, sensate vagina with adequate depth for intercourse. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and depending upon the extent of surgery, can last anywhere from 5 to 8 hours. Occasionally, skin grafts are required in order to achieve adequate vaginal depth. Your pre-operative physical examination will determine whether or not a skin graft is necessary.
The typical hospital stay for gender confirmation surgery is five to seven days, including the day of surgery. You will need to arrive in town one day prior to surgery, and are encouraged to spend two days after discharge from the hospital in local housing (hotel information provided below). In other words, if your surgery is scheduled for Monday, you will be required to arrive in town on Sunday. You will be discharged from the hospital the following Saturday, Sunday, or Monday, and it is recommended that you spend the following Tuesday and Wednesday in our local housing. Not counting the day of surgery, you will be confined to bed for four to five days. If your surgery is done on Monday, you will be able to get out of bed the following Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. We recommend reading material or other personal items to help occupy your time.

Weiss Memorial Hospital (www.weisshospital.com), located at 4646 North Marine Dr., Chicago, Illinois, Advocate Lutheran General Hospital (www.advocatehealth.com/luth), located at 1775 Dempster Street, Park Ridge, Illinois, and Thorek Memorial Hospital (www.thorek.org), located at 850 W. We recommend that you bring only necessities such as personal toiletries and sanitary napkins in a light carrying case. You will spend most of your time in bed, and hospital gowns will be provided. We also suggest that you bring dark, loose fitting clothing as there will be some tenderness, swelling, and discharge following surgery.
