Cleft lip and palate are among the most common birth defects in children. Cleft lip is the incomplete formation of the upper lip. Cleft palate is the incomplete formation of the roof of the mouth. Both conditions can involve one side or both sides and can have varying degrees of severity. Cleft lip and palate can occur individually or both defects can occur together. The goal of plastic surgery to correct cleft lip and palate is to restore form and function and restore a more normal appearance.
At Loren S. Schechter, M.D. Plastic Surgery we provide a specialized multidisciplinary approach to those children including collaboration with a cleft lip and palate team with Pediatricians, Ear Nose and Throat specialists, Pediatric dentists, Hearing specialists, Speech specialists, Genetic counselors and social workers.
