Hemifacial Microsomia/Goldenhar Syndrome

Microtia can occur as an isolated condition or in combination with other conditions such as Hemifacial Microsomia or Goldenhar Syndrome. Hemifacial Microsomia is an underdevelopment of tissue, bone, cartilage and neurovascular structures on one side of the face. This can affect the soft tissue, the mouth and lower jaw, as well as the ear and the facial nerve. There is a wide spectrum of this condition and the treatment is based on the individual condition.

It includes correction of the underdeveloped jaw with distraction osteogenesis, involves reconstruction of the underdeveloped or absent ear with rib cartilage, and reconstruction/reanimation of the affected facial nerve. In addition soft tissue augmentation with free tissue transfer and/or fat grafting can be performed.
